Religion was established first in families and there the devil seeks to crush it. -Thomas Manton
The families of Christians should be little churches. -Richard Baxter
Having finished reading Terry Johnson’s The Family Worship Book, it is now with a strong conviction that the practice of family worship in this present day is nearly abandoned and needs to be revived, starting with my family. For those who struggle with regularly practicing family worship, as do I, or unsure how to go about practicing family worship, Johnson’s book is an excellent resource and tool. I cannot recommend it enough!
Johnson gives a simple and straightforward way to have a 15-20 minute time of family worship daily:
- Call to Worship / Prayer of Praise
- Singing of Psalms and Hymns
- Reciting of Creeds and Commandments
- Scripture Reading
- Prayers of Confessions, Intercession, and Thanksgiving
- Ascriptions of Praise (Doxology)
- Benediction
